Officially the Republic of Benin is a West African country bordering Togo to the west, Nigeria to the east and Burkina Faso and Niger to the north. It has a small southern coastline on the Bight of Benin where most of the population is located. Approximately covering a 110,000 square kilometer area Benin is a tropical sub-Saharan region that is highly dependent on agriculture as the main employment generator. French is still the official language of Benin who only recently gained independence from France in the year 1960. Known as Dahomey prior to independence, it has no direct connection to Benin City that lies within modern Nigeria nor to the Benin Bronzes.
