Classifieds Ads for Benin Tourism – the ‘cradle of voodoo’
Officially the Republic of Benin is a West African country bordering Togo to the west, Nigeria to the east and Burkina Faso and Niger to the north. It has a small southern coastline on the Bight of Benin where most of the population is located. Approximately covering a 110,000 square kilometer area Benin is a tropical sub-Saharan region that is highly dependent on agriculture as the main employment generator. French is still the official language of Benin who only recently gained independence from France in the year 1960. Known as Dahomey prior to independence, it has no direct connection to Benin City that lies within modern Nigeria nor to the Benin Bronzes.

A major national park of West Africa around a meander in the River Niger includes areas of three countries including Benin, Niger and Burkina Faso.
Benin may be just a slice of land in West Africa but it is the ‘cradle of voodoo’, the biggest centre of slave trade (ages ago) and the only country in this part of the world to have embraced Marxism. Benin isn’t all about the supernatural; it’s also a country of friendly people, quaint villages on stilts and exotic local handicrafts in colourful bazaars. Not exactly the place for history and architecture lovers, but you can start talking to locals who”ll regale you with tales of otherworldly experiences! Take your time in Benin and the secrets will gradually unfurl to give you a mystical holiday quite unlike any other place on this planet. And that too without having to worry about political skirmishes or ambushes.
This club-shaped country, on the western edge of Nigeria, was once one of the most powerful empires in Africa – the Dahomey kingdom. The ruins of the Dahomeyans’ palaces and temples can be seen in Abomey.
Abomey is one of Benin’s main tourist attractions, with palaces that became a World Heritage Site in 1982, while Ouidah
is a poignant reminder of where their riches came from: the slave trade.
The Slave Route (Route d’Esclaves) in Ouidah was the last walk on African soil for slaves bound for Brazil and the Caribbean.
Museums here and in Porto Novo, Benin’s lagoon-side capital, examine the resultant Afro-Brazilian society and culture.
When you need some quiet days in the sun away from Cotonou, Grand Popo is the obvious alternative in Benin.
The town of Grand Popo itself is located near the Togolese border, roughly about 85km, which makes it about 1 hour drive from Cotonou.
Cotonou, on the other hand, is urban Africa at its most frazzling and interesting – but is not without its own charms, a lively nightlife, restaurants and good shopping being a couple of them.
Cotonou is the only international airport in Benin. There are direct flights to Benin from Belgium, France, Nigeria and a number of African countries.
